“Introduction to Cryptography, Computer Surveillance and Security

Due to the sensitivity of materials presented on this course, only security screened personnel will be permitted attendance. Early booked strongly advised

Scheduled Dates

Overview

It is frequently said that in today’s society that “Information is the commodity of greatest value”. This comprehensive course will study security concepts from two perspectives - the police need to understand computer security in order to protect sensitive data and some of the techniques used by the criminal element to communicate with impunity and protect incriminating data.

This one-week workshop will provide a detailed overview of cryptography, the utilities used to encrypt Internet traffic, computer data and email, and the requirements and tools that are needed to break encrypted information. Emphasis will also be placed on how Steganographic tools can be used to hide data inside other files and how passwords can (and sometimes cannot) be broken using specialized “crackers”. Computer surveillance software and hardware tools will be discussed and demonstrated (as well as their countermeasures) and an overview of Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) will be presented as it related to data protected by encryption and the power to require disclosure of protected data. Students will be assigned team exercises in which they will be required to communicate via the Internet in a way in which it cannot be determined who the intended recipient is or is it possible to determine the contents of any messages sent.

Candidates require a working understanding of common Internet communication applications (i.e. email, Internet Relay Chat, etc.) and the Windows Operating System. It is recommended that students complete the West Yorkshire Police “Using the Internet as a Police Intelligence Tool” programme prior to taking this course. Students will be supplied with a CD-ROM containing a comprehensive collection of cryptographic and steganographic applications in addition to a number of utilities to crack passwords, provide surveillance of a target computer and destroy potential evidence on a computer system.

“Introduction to Tracing Email, Network Architecture and Internet Service Providers (ISPs)”

Scheduled Dates

Overview

This one-week course will provide the candidate with an understanding of TCP/IP (Internet) based network architecture as it relates to police investigations.  General theory regarding the interception of Internet and network-based communications will be covered, as will some techniques that may be employed for it.  In addition to learning how to trace e-mail to its point of origin, students will be introduced to the UNIX operating system.  The structure of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) will be shown and students will be given an understanding of what an ISP can and cannot provide to Police during the course of an investigation. Students will install and configure a re-mailing system that will allow the sending and receiving of email without divulging the location or identity of the user. An overview of Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) will be presented as it relates to the interception of email communications. Students will be given team exercises that relate to the tracking and arrest of an online “cyberstalker”.
