Acquiring useful and relevant open source intelligence (OSINT) requires much more than just an ability to surf the web. Many valuable sources of intelligence are unknown and untapped by investigators who simply “don't know what they don't know” about finding information online.

Aimed at managers, front-line investigators, researchers and analysts alike, this comprehensive two-day training course will provide detailed instruction in effectively using the internet as an open source investigation and research tool.

In-Person Training

Attendees will receive expert instruction on the latest online research tools and analytical techniques, a comprehensive collection of training materials, a secure, personally-configured laptop computer to keep (optional), and a one-year subscription to TII’s Premium Resources Knowledge Base.

Level 1

Level One provides a detailed introduction to the World Wide Web as a research and intelligence gathering tool, and guides students through many of the advanced search features of both popular and lesser-known search engines and similar search portals.

In addition to the use of “Boolean” and “Enforced Term Operators”, which can significantly affect the results presented by search engines, students will explore the use of Meta search tools and Web directories. Students will also be introduced to a number of specialized and relatively unknown tools essential for mining open source intelligence from the Deep Web. This level also examines browser options and configuration, introduces the concept of Internet global language distribution, and explains the pertinent differences between the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Course Topics:

  • “Boolean” and “Enforced Term Operators
  • Meta Search Tools
  • Web Directories
  • Mining Open Source Intelligence Tools
  • Browser Options and Configurations
  • Concept of Internet Global Language Distribution
  • Differences between the Internet and the World Wide Web

Level 2

Building upon the skills gained during Level One, the Level Two module introduces students to the principles of open source research and the intelligence analysis process.

In addition to learning guidelines for the critical analysis of Internet sourced information and the analysis and dissemination of research results, students will examine the structure of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and how search engines can (and sometimes cannot, or will not) index individual documents. Website scanning and downloading utilities will be examined, in addition to a number of translation tools and the Internet Archive. Identification of, and search for, IP addresses, and WHOIS lookups are also introduced, as well as online data storage tools, which are critical to the practical application of the preservation and integrity of online sourced materials and evidence.

Course Topics:

  • Guidelines for Critical Analysis
  • Analysis and Dissemination of Research Results
  • Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
  • Search Engine Indexing
  • Website Scanning and Downloading Utilities
  • Translation Tools
  • Identification and Searches using: IP Addresses, WHOIS Directory, Online Data Storage Tools
